Walking into the supermarket or scrolling online for a gift, you spot a sea of chocolate boxes, sweet treats, and indulgent goodies. For most Kiwis, that's a safe go-to gift. But what do you get when your friend, relative, or colleague is living with diabetes?

Let's be real - diabetes shouldn't make gifting stressful! In fact, with a little care, your gift can be even more meaningful, memorable, and delicious. Here are tips to brilliant snack gifting (and a few myths that need to be left in the dust, pronto).

Myth #1: "People with Diabetes Can't Enjoy Anything Sweet. It's All Lettuce and Broccoli!"

False, and a bit boring. Being diabetes-conscious doesn't mean joyless snacking! There are so many tasty options available: snacks sweetened with stevia or monk fruit, real-fruit crisps, dark chocolate with very little chocolate, wholesome nut and seed mixes, gourmet seeded crackers ... the list goes on.

Myth #2: "It Has to Be Sugar-Free or It's Unsafe"

Too simple! Sure, keeping sugars down is key for people with diabetes - but not every 'sugar-free" food is healthy, and some can taste like cardboard. The real magic is finding snacks that are naturally low in sugar (think spicy nut mixes, savoury seed bars) and using diabetic-friendly ingredients. Always check labels for high level of carbs and hidden sugars that will spike sugar levels.

Myth #3: "A Gift Hamper for Someone with Diabetes Will Look Sad and Boring"

No Way! Carefully chosen, a diabetic-friendly hamper can be thoughtful, tempting and appreciated. The secret? Colour, variety, and a splash of Kiwi flair. Imagine seeded crackers, flavoured crunchy nuts, savoury cheese bites, dark chocolate, and refreshing fruit flavoured drinks sweetened with stevia (Vital Zing NZ) that make you want to reach for seconds. Add in a stainless steel water bottle, candle. body lotion, coffee cup and you've got Instagram gold.

Final Thought (with a cheerful challenge!)

The next time you're gift-hunting, skip the old-school sweets and go bold. Your thoughtful, diabetic-friendly hamper could be just what makes your friend's day - delicious, guilt-free, and full of flavour. Gift giving for people with diabetes isn't about restriction; it's about creativity, care, and a whole lot of yum. Challenge accepted?
