What to write in a get well card

When someone you care about is unwell, finding the right words can feel surprisingly hard. You want to say something meaningful… but not overwhelming. Supportive… but not cliché.

If you’ve ever stared at a blank card wondering “what do I even say?” — you’re not alone.

In our Care Collective community, this is one of the most common questions we hear. So, here are some simple, thoughtful messages you can use (or adapt) depending on your situation.

💛 Simple and Safe Messages - What to Write in a Get Well Card

  • “Thinking of you and sending strength your way.”

  • “Wishing you rest, comfort, and brighter days ahead.”

  • “You don’t have to go through this alone.”

🌿 When You Want to Be More Personal

  • "I'm holding you in my thoughts and sending you strength for the days ahead."

  • "You matter so much to me, and I'm just a message away if you ever need anything".

  • "I may not fully understand what this feels like, but I care about you and I'm here."

  • "I'm really sorry you're going through this - I'm thinking of you often."

  • “I know this isn’t easy, but I’m here for anything you need — anytime.”

  • “You’ve got so many people quietly cheering you on, me included.”

💬 Short & Gentle (for cards with limited space)

  • “Sending love.”

  • “Here for you.”

  • “One day at a time ”

⚠️ What to Avoid

  • “Everything happens for a reason”

  • “Stay positive”

  • “At least…”

👉 These can feel dismissive, even if well-meaning.

Sometimes, it’s not just the words you write in a get well card — it’s the feeling behind them.

Pairing your message with something small and thoughtful can make someone feel truly seen.
